Poynter launches ethics site to help journalists

Truth and Trust in Media is a new website designed to help journalists navigate their way through the “treacherous” world of “unverified tweets and anonymous comments” that journalists are faced with today.

Writing about the launch on PoynterSandra Oshiro says the site “invites both readers and journalists to be part of an evolving discussion about ethical decision-making.”

Kelly McBride, a Poynter senior faculty member, says the site will not have a “one-size fits all” ethics code, and she says that although they will “not be able to define exactly who is a journalist,” they will rather be able to judge news content as “journalistic, or not journalistic, based on the principles of truth, transparency and community.”

McBride’s ethics blog is included, and visitors to the site can ask her and other Poynter experts questions in a feature called “Ask the Ethicist.” There are also announcements of related events and a compilation of FAQs “to give you a better understanding of the type of conversation surrounding the topic of ethics in media.”
