German media participating in GDPR-compliant alliances to take on the duopoly

Axel Springer, Germany’s largest news publisher, is participating in an alliance that is building a unified access platform for all partner sites that comply with the GDPR, Digiday reported. A website for the sign-in platform, called “Verimi”, is already online.

In addition to simplifying account management, the collaboration aims to build a safe online “master key” that protects users' identities and keeps their personal data within EU jurisdiction, thanks to the GDPR compliance requirement. 

Verimi also includes non-media partners such as Allianz, Deutsche Bank and Lufthansa. According to Digiday, the universal login platform should be launched by the beginning of 2018, but the project also aims to expand to other products.

Earlier Digiday reported about another alliance by the German media that is also aiming to launch a single-login service. “Unified Internet” was launched with the participation of RTL Group and ProSiebenSat.1 Media SE, two biggest broadcasters in Germany.

Earlier this summer we reported on two different alliances by the French news media, which are building joint online ad-sales platforms based on shared audience data.
