Does “news literacy” need a new definition?

Jeff Jarvis argues that “news literacy” needs to be redefined in order to be effective in this day and age, the main issue being that the relationship between the press and the public has become less hierarchical. Today, the “audience” doesn’t merely consume news but is a participant more than ever, for instance by distributing news through social sharing.

Moreover, Jarvis says that "literacy" needs to work both ways: journalists need to be more literate about the public’s conversations, so that their journalism is informed by the mood and opinions of the public.

This weekend the topic will be discussed at the Arizone State University’s event. News literacy is likely to stay in the news: for instance the Facebook Journalism Project aims to address related issues.
