UK Digital Economy Bill criticised for lacking data protection safeguards

In a joint letter published in the Daily Telegraph (paywall), the group called for the “personal data-sharing proposals” to be removed from the planned legislation because of insufficient safeguards, Ars Technica reported

The bill, which has been in the news for its controversial restrictions related to pornography, would put government ministers “in control of citizens’ personal data”, according to the letter. The new legislation aims to facilitate sharing data within the government and with private companies, while the group is concerned that personal data could be misappropriated in the process, according to the Stack.

The group is calling for increased controls over data sharing, and clear guidelines regarding the release of personal data within or outside the government.
