Coalition of European cloud service providers release a Code of Conduct, focusing on data protection

Cloud Infrastructure Services Providers in Europe (CISPE) is a newly formed coalition of over 20 European cloud infrastructure service providers. Under the CISPE Code of Conduct, the companies are not allowed to “data mine or profile customers’ personal data for marketing, advertising or similar activities”, either for their own purposes or for third parties, the coalition said in a press release.

The code also requires participating companies to give their customers the “ability to exclusively process and store data within the EU/EEA territories”, giving them control over where their data is located physically. Companies that sign up to the CISPE Code will be identified by a “trust mark”.

The CISPE Code takes into account the upcoming EU General Data Protection Regulation, which will come to force in April 2018.

However, according to Ars Technica, the CISPE Code of Conduct would seem to be in conflict with the goals of the TISA trade agreement negotiations, where some want to include the requirement of free flow of data across borders.
