Facebook pays 140 news outlets and celebrities to use Facebook Live

The social media giant has signed contracts with legacy news media (such as News York Times, CNN), digital news publishers (Vox Media, Mashable, the Huffington Post) and celebrities (Gordon Ramsey, Kevin Hart). According to the Wall Street Journal, the arrangements are meant to encourage publishers to create videos for Facebook Live until a more concrete plan to pay for video creators, such as by sharing ad revenue, is established.

It has been known for a while that Facebook sees video as a key element of its future strategy, and thus relies on a steady stream of high-quality video content.

While the news publishing industry is defining its approach to Facebook as a content distribution platform, the fact that the company is making payments to the participating media adds a new element in the relationship. So far there is little information how Facebook is planning to develop a more stable long-term plan regarding financial compensations for the news media.
