From photos of fire engines to a nationwide debate

Speaking at Monday's Media Port session on "Community building," Hansen says VG asked readers to send in photos of their local fire department's trucks. The result was a massive influx of photos – 1,000 all told – and a debate about the organization of fire departments in Norway, leading to legislation for re-organization.

VG's live coverage of pop star Justin Bieber's arrival in October 2012 attracted massive attention from people between 12 and 19 years old – who also viewed the site's international news coverage in large numbers. The young are "the sharing generation," Hansen says.

The paper is also working to get readers involved in investigative reporting. A campaign involving kindergartens enjoyed moderate success, he says.
