Campaign to 'go green'

Manfred Werfel, Deputy CEO, WAN-IFRA spoke on 'Grow Green' at the finale of the Conference.

There are many strong attacks on print for damaging the environment. But very less trees used for newsprint and most is from recycled paper, he said.

"We must communicate to people that newspapers are not dirty business but made from recycled paper and from renewable resources.

"But we must improve workflows and reduce CO2 emission is key," said Werfel.

He quoted the Spanish newspaper Artes Graficas del Atlantico case which built windmills behind their plant.

'Also, the case of Print Centre Rhein Main' case where they put solar panels over their huge roof, getting 10% of total energy consumption.

And one case of 'Badische Zeitung', Germany which took 7 years on energy saving steps.

He said that along with the WAN-IFRA India team a campaign to 'go green' would begin for the India newspaper business.
