Sponsoring, along with mentoring, are significant for career growth

You referred to everyone as "your brother" within this vast fraternal order.  Since women made up less than 2% of our local, we had no familial camaraderie like men had. We just used our proper names.

Being one of the lucky ones to be inducted in the union, I quickly learned first hand the unbalanced and stale opportunites that women in my industry unfortunately had.

There were a few mentors along the way, ones that really showed me the ropes and to develop the thick skin that was so crucial to survive in the industry, but there were also one or two that were advocates on my behalf.  They supported my craft, chose me for jobs that could have easily went to one of the 1000 other brothers in my local.  Their advocacy was the sponsorship that was so essential for my career.

This idea of sponsoring, rather than mentoring, is a subject that has been examined for the advancement of women in the workforce.

According to the Harvard Business Review article titled, Why Men Still Get More Promotions Than Women,

"while women generally have traditional mentors, men have sponsors. These sponsors go beyond giving feedback and advice, and use their influence with senior-level executives to advocate for their mentee’s career advancement. The sponsors help open doors to the top level for their mentee rather than just pointing out where the doors are and explaining how to open them."

This particular theme will be further explored at the Women in Media Luncheon which will be held on Tuesday, 30 October within the World Publishing Expo.

Please join us and your peers as we engage on this topic.  A panel discussion will share their experiences and ideas, helping you incorporate this in your career path.
