Encouraging entrepreneurship

“The journalist-entrepreneurs have taken control of their own destiny with their own blogs, Twitter, social media,” he says. Forbes has embraced this approach, making Forbes.com a publishing platform that – in addition to having its own staff – has partnered with 1,000 contributors.

It creates tools so they can create their own content sites and provides incentive by paying them for performance, based on repeat visitors – not on page views.

The approach has seen traffic rise from 14 million to 31 million monthly visitors with digital revenues increasing 26 per cent in the last six months.

Mr Forbes says this was a small example “that will create a shift in the marketplace not only in the media but in the marketplace in general.

“The key to our future and engine of growth is small businesses, and our role at Forbes is to highlight and celebrate their impact on success,” he says.
