An App for Change

Al-Jazirah Plus, launched in August 2011, pushes content to users and provides a means for users to provide feedback and user-generated content. And though the current potential audience is small, such Apps have great potential across the Middle East region, says Dean du Toit, Commercial and Project Manager for Al-Jazirah.

Forty-four per cent of Saudi Arabia’s 26.5 million population are active internet users, but with 55 per cent of the population still to come online, there is great future potential for growth, he says. In addition, Saudi Arabia is a young country, where the average age is 25 – a lot of potential digital customers.

In the Middle East as a whole, there are 77 million regular internet users. “It’s a very interesting stat – one of opportunity,” he says. “It’s a growing market.”

Al-Jazirah has also just launched a women’s magazine, something that is a challenge in Saudi Arabia. “It’s always been quite difficult in Saudi Arabia to bring out new media products,” Mr duToit says/ “But the Saudi population is changing, it is opening up and becoming easier for people to do what they couldn’t do in the past.”
