News wire vs. multimedia service provider

The business model of news agencies is in transition. "Our customers request a lot more live coverage," says Christoph Pleitgen, managing director of Reuters.

The CEO of the Austrian Press Agency APA, Peter Kropsch, adds that the problem is to refinance the multimedia content.

The deputy editor-in-chief of the German press agency dpa, Michael Ludewig, thinks that news agencies should also take advantage of technological advances. He is talking about a backchannel, so that the dpa knows how to adjust products for its clients.

Philippe Massonnet, global news director at Agence France-Presse: "We have to provide better organized and selected content to our customers."

All four agree that they have to deal with reduction of editorial resources.
