Lessons learned: five guiding principles for media development

Anne Nelson, professor at Columbia University, New York, USA, and author of a recently published WAN-IFRA report, offers five principals to guide media development work to ensure that beyond editorial independence, financial independence is also achieved.

1.    You have to know the context. In order to make the proper intervention, make sure you ask the basic questions about the publication's country. For example, what is their cell phone penetration? What are the literacy rates?

2.    Improve data. There needs to be more precision in analyzing media and collecting data.

3.    Don't forget about print. Online news is sweeping the globe, but in many developing countries traditional media, such as print or radio, still reaches the most people. It's important to have a balance between innovation and the here and now, according to Nelson.

4.    Know your baseline. In order understand the impact of media development work in the future, you need to know the current state of the media.

5.    Different countries have different needs. The experiences of newspapers in the United States don't necessarily apply to what's happening in other parts of the world.
