In his speech, Yung tells that although there are enormous downloads from web users, its newspaper circulations have not gone down. Therefore, he reckons that news is not dying and what we have to focus on is how to push the news to the audiences. “Contents have to be like water, have to be flexible,” said Yung. In other words, the best practice is to produce news contents that can fit video, animated, audio news.

Yung then introduce the types of news provided by Next Media Group. These include text and photos, video news, animated news, audio news, real-time news and TV news. He then speaks about the main challenges faced by Next Media Group, involving cross-platform development, how to monetize the apps and comprehend what readers check out on the web. In the beginning of the speech, Tan shows his appreciation for Steve Jobs of Apple Inc. He believes that the lesson learnt from this great man is to be a great storyteller. “It is not enough to have a good idea; we have to sell it to advertisers to make deals,” said Tan.

Then, he explains SPH’s focus on mobile with the analogy of lions. He says that lions usually congregate at waterholes to stalk their prey. In the lion city “Singapore” in which newspapers take up 51% of the expenditure in Singapore, he tells that the reason why SPH bothers with mobile is they are looking for more waterholes and seek to secure themselves right across the border.

Next, Tan explains the phenomenal and exponential growth of mobile and digital and introduces the out-of-home platforms of SPH. “There will be more mobiles than TVs, mobile infiltrates our lives in such a deep way that we rely totally on mobiles these days,” Tan says.

"In the time of crisis, mobile phone becomes even more important," Mikami says, "but it was not working when people needed it." When the earthquake hit Japan on March 11th this year, mobile phones suffered major disruption.

Around 6,720 stations of Docomo were out of service. Battery ran out due to long hours of power outage while major operators regulated calls to avoid breakdown of telecommunication system. Interestingly, internet worked with their stations based outside Japan. GPS was used for road situations as the earthquake hits the region. Mikami quotes an example - Honda disclosed data and info of car navigation.

Mikami says, however, mobile phones will "always be needed in times of crisis and emergency" or communication location sharing and internet connection.

What are the problems with cheap phones which make up 80 per cent of all models? They cannot display Vietnamese language and are running on different operating systems. To deliver the good content on mobile to Vietnamese, the application has to be compatible with different systems, pre-installed in handsets and is easy to use.

Minh launched Vietnam+, the first and only licensed multi-language mobile news application in Vietnam which runs on 2G and 3G phones. By 1 Nov  2011, the number of VietnamPlus' mobile subscribers reaches 160,000 and in this year, they have at least 500 new subscribers each day. Aspermont is a business-to-business publisher that works predominately on the mining sector. Shepherdson tells that the company owns subscribers, quality contents and dedicated, captive audience across the print and existing online products. It has good subscribers and advertiser retention rates and a desire to keep them. Moreover, it focuses on ease of accessibility and remains agnostic to the technology. Site sponsorship, mobile landing pages are value-add opportunities that Aspermont can offer.

Shepherdson then introduces the value proposition in digital media. He points out that advertisers are interested in unique visits, impressions and time on sites. Auto redirect to mobile sites is the key, no matter what the device is. People hit websites via mobile devices more often than ever before, and if they don’t like the experience they don’t stay around. To begin with, she gives a snapsot of India, the Indian media landscape, and the Indian advertising market. India is the world’s fastest growing telecom market, with overall 80% tele-density. However, since there is an increased fragmentation of media, crossed platforms are employed to retain customers and attract the youth.

As India is one of the youngest nations on the planet (with more than 65% under the age of 35) and the young population tends to use mobiles a lot, she strongly believes that mobile and tablet content have huge latent demand, which needs to be promoted and monetized by content owners and partners.

In her opinion, those who rely on apps are power news customers. “Readers are willing to pay for apps, something which we all missed in web,” she says. Nevertheless, she highlights the importance to find the optimum price to get the maximum subscription revenue thorough user feedback and focus group discussions.

Eko Prabowo, a researcher from Kompas Gramedia of Indonesia, thinks that the conference is good because it has introduced different approaches in tablet marketing and brand imaging. He appreciates Stephane Carpentier’s speech on “Wild, fun and ground-breaking: Exploring tablets most innovative features” the most, because it is presented with amazing animations and graphics.

Prabowo tells that this is his first time to Hong Kong. “I like the city a lot. I think the transportation system here is very well-structured and cheap. In Indonesia there are a lot of horns, but here in Hong Kong it is quiet,” he says.
