Facebook says it will cooperate fully with the Russia investigation, but cuts access to relevant data

Sandberg, who met with lawmakers in Washington this week, said in an interview with Axios that the company would help the investigators looking into foreign influence during the US presidential elections release Russia-related political ads, Reuters reported.

Sandberg admitted that the company had made mistakes during the election campaign, and offered the investigators more data from the platform, the New York Times reported.

However, Facebook seems to have taken down data that helped researchers depict a more comprehensive picture of the scale of interference on the platform: after a social media analyst reported that the reach of the Russian disinformation campaign likely exceeded what Facebook had initially reported, the company cut access to a lot of the related data, the Washington Post reported.

Facebook said it removed the concerned posts as a result of a correction of a “bug”, which allowed the researcher to have access to more data than he should have in the first place. The removed data concerned content that according to Facebook was inactive and, because of the company’s privacy commitments, should not have been available.
