Facebook tightens advertising rules on the platform

Ads are typically bought through an automated system on Facebook, but the company is now introducing a manual review process to advertising that uses specific categories to target people, Axios reported.

Facebook is presumably making changes to its advertising processes as a reaction to the growing concern over political advertising on the platform. The company is also facing unprecedented pressure from Washington, where open hearings are being prepared to investigate the scale of Russian interference into the 2016 US presidential elections.

According to Buzzfeed, further government regulation is one of the potential outcomes of the investigations, which could force online platforms to publicly disclose political ad spending in the future.

One issue Facebook will undoubtedly have to face is questions about its direct involvement in the Trump campaign, of which there is growing evidence. The Trump campaign digital director told CBS News that Facebook provided the them with “embeds”, Facebook employees, who would help the campaign use the platform’s advertising technology efficiently.
