Newsday's transformative multichannel publishing project

Newsday Media Group publishes one of the largest-circulation newspapers in the United States: its namesake title, Newsday, which serves Long Island and New York City and has an average weekday circulation of just over 203,600 copies and a Sunday circulation of nearly 250,000. It has won 19 Pulitzer Prizes and is read by five out of 10 Long Island adults each week.

The group's other properties include Newsday.com; amNewYork, New York City’s most widely circulated free daily paper, along with its mobile app and amNY.com; Newsday Connect, a digital solutions company serving Long Island business owners; and Newsday Local Publishing, one of the Northeast's largest groups of weekly shopper publications.
Newsday is also active digitally; its content also can be found on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat and Pinterest.

Millrod is an assistant managing editor at Newsday, and has been involved in several transformation projects since he began working there as a copy editor in 1985. For example, he says, “I was involved in our original purchase of a Unisys Hermes system in 1999 and was the project manager for a redesign of Newsday with Mario Garcia in 2004.

“Editorial technology has been an area of special interest for me from the beginning of my career,” Millrod adds. “Being one of the project managers in our multichannel publishing project over the past two years has been a great and exciting challenge.”

'A truly integrated system'

Newsday undertook the large-scale project because their systems had become dated, and they were cobbling together makeshift solutions to try to get by.

“We recognized that we were producing content for the digital channels that represent our best hope for the future with a jerry-rigged [improvised] system designed to put ink on paper,” Millrod says. “Today, through our partnership with Atex, we have a truly integrated system that begins with pure content in a neutral channel and allows us to preview and customize it for delivery to our readers wherever they choose to read it – print, desktop, mobile web, and our tablet and phone apps for Android, iOS and Kindle.

“Using our Hermes 11 system content streams and metadata, we're also feeding newsletters, a sports app, Amazon's e-reader, vendor feeds and our homegrown news budget system,” Millrod says. “Our digital media desk is not only a multimedia archive of print and digital publishing assets, but we've used it to integrate into our workflow the creation and editing of videos and photo lists and galleries.”

In his presentation on Monday, 10 October, at Digital Media World (at World Publishing Expo in Vienna), Millrod says he hopes to show “how we've used this project to integrate print and digital, not just technologically, but on a human level as well. We've transformed two newsrooms – Newsday and amNew York, our NYC paper – into multichannel journalistic enterprises.”

He adds that the process involved retraining some 400 journalists during a six-week period as the rollout began last autumn.

“The component we're working on right now,” he says, “is the two-way, browser-based Atex Contributor Tool that will allow reporters in the field to use mobile devices to write stories within the system.”

“We're wrapping up the second phase of our project, which has involved collaboration between a Newsday team, Atex developers, and a group of Newscycle application specialists,” he says.
